Experts were on hand to discuss the benefits of home composting and compost made from recycled green materials on Tuesday 6 May in?Seaford,?Wednesday 7 May in?Newhaven,?Thursday 8 May in?Lewes,?Friday 9 May in Hove?and Saturday 10 May in Brighton. This was an excellent opportunity to pick up home composting tips, learn about the advantages of introducing nutrients back into the land as nature intended, and the importance of keeping green clean.
In 2007 the residents of East Sussex sent around 123 thousand tonnes of organic waste to landfill that could have been composted. When organic waste is sent to landfill, it breaks down without oxygen and as a result the greenhouse gas methane is produced. When this waste is composted aerobically (with air), it breaks down naturally and does not produce methane, which is good news for the earth.
Charlie Trousdell, managing director of TJ Composting Services, commented 'Composting is a simple, cheap and effective solution to sustainable living. By adding peat-free, recycled, organic materials back into the land we can achieve long term results, such as increasing nutrient and moisture value which in turn encourages fertility and plant growth instead of dumping potentially harmful waste into an already full to capacity landfill.'
Compost Awareness Week was brought to the UK by The Composting Association and now forms a key part of Waste Resources Action Programme?s (WRAP) annual calendar.
